About

April Wang

As a therapist representing the BIPOC community, I strive to provide anti-racism, inclusive and accessible therapy services. As an Asian female, my unique bicultural background allows me to offer a distinct perspective when working with clients. I moved to the United States with my mother and two siblings at the age of 12. During my primary education journey, I experienced cultural shock  and the challenges related to the acculturation process, while also grappling with my identity as both Taiwanese and American. These personal experiences have given me a deep understanding of the complexities involved in navigating multiple cultural identities and the emotional challenges that come with it.

My background helps me relate to clients who are also navigating cultural transitions and identity struggles. I can empathize with their experiences of feeling torn between different cultural expectations and provide a safe space for them to explore and express their identities. This understanding allows me to build stronger therapeutic relationships. Additionally, my bicultural perspective enables me to incorporate culturally sensitive approaches into therapy. I am aware of the importance of cultural nuances in shaping one's experiences and can tailor my therapeutic techniques to better align with my clients' cultural backgrounds. This can be particularly beneficial for clients from diverse backgrounds who may feel misunderstood or marginalized in other settings.

My goal is to support clients in their journey toward mental and emotional well-being by providing therapy that is both inclusive and culturally attuned. During my part-time job as a Chinese teacher, I observed students struggling with behavioral issues in a school setting. This inspired me to help children therapeutically. I have a particular passion for play therapy, believing in the healing power of play and its potential as a therapeutic entryway to one's inner world.

I have an undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which provided me with a profound understanding of how family dynamics impact children's lives and continue to influence them into adulthood.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, picnicking at the beach, and painting-by-numbers.
